The ‎Federal Government, through the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme, has started engaging stakeholders in the Niger Delta in an effort to find a lasting solution to the current activities of militants in the region. The Amnesty Programme boss, Brigadier General P.T. Boroh (rtd.), yesterday led a high-level delegation that included representatives of the Office of the Vice President and Office of the National Security Adviser.

The delegation met with a special committee set up by Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, to look into the recent destruction of oil and gas installations in the state. The committee, led by the state Deputy Governor, Barr. Kingsey Otuaro, briefed the delegation on their activities and asked for collaboration between the State and Federal Government to tackle the issue.

In his response the Amnesty Boss assured the committee of his full support and promised to use his office to tackle the root cause of the problem. He said that the Federal Government will ensure that restive youths in the Niger Delta are engaged positively.

News Express reports that the Presidential Amnesty Programme has so far succeeded in training/ rehabilitating ‎17,322 persons since it was started five years ago.
