Suspected Fulani herdsmen struck Wednesday morning between the hours of 7 and 8, attacking passengers in the commuter bus conveying them to work, from Enugu to Awka.

Among the victims was the wife of an Enugu-based journalist, Sir Abuchi Anueyiagu. The woman is a secondary school teacher in Anambra State.

Relating the incident yesterday toNews Express, Sir Anueyiagu said: “My dear wife and other passengers were attacked by well-armed large number of Fulani cattle herders on the horribly dilapidated Enugu-Onitsha expressway and dispossessed (robbed) of their personal belongings: monies, hand bags containing valuable documents, telephone handsets, wallets and other items at gunpoint.

“Eyewitness account has it that while in transit on their way from Enugu to Awka Anambra State where she works, a horde of Fulani cattle herders suddenly emerged from the bush in-between Oji River and Ugwuoba with strong arms and blocked their bus along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway and robbed them of all their belongings at gunpoint, and very curiously the incident was said to have occurred in-between two military and police checkpoints at Oji River-Ugwuoba axis of Enugu State on that Enugu-Onitsha expressway.”

News Expressreports that Enugu has been in the news lately on account of attacks by Fulani herdsmen, one of the worst cases being the devastating attack last month on Nimbo community in Uzo Uwani that sparked widespread anger.
