Strike collapses in Lagos?: Megacity bursts into life as protesters are cleared off the roads

Movement has resumed in Nigeria’s economic hub Lagos after protesters were cleared off the roads to ensure the free-flow of traffic.

A number of people who reacted to the previous story by News Express on the effects of the strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in partnership with their Civil Society allies, confirmed that traffic is now flowing unhindered.

One of them said: “I came from Ikorodu, passed Ojota and now in Ikeja; there are activities everywhere. Banks, vehicles, petrol stations are open.”

A company executive whose office is located in Ikoyi on Lagos Island said: “There’s movement and we are all at work o!!!! Staff buses have been arriving and work is happening and people are at work even those from Ikorodu.”

News Express had in the previous story entitled “BREAKING NEWS: Striking workers ground Lagos” quoted an eyewitness as reporting the arrival of soldiers to the blocked portion of Ikorodu Road, apparently to disperse the protesters. In Ikeja, policemen were seen making frantic calls at the blocked Airport Road, obviously for instructions on how to manage the situation.

The fate of the strike called to protest the sudden increase in fuel price from about N86.50 per litre to N145 per litre is unclear.

There had been uncertainty as to whether the strike would hold, especially after the National Industrial Court, to which the Federal Government dragged Labour, yesterday ordered both parties to maintain the status quo, even as an NLC faction and some other affiliate trade unions distanced themselves from the action.
