Hope of end to varsity strike rises as FG, ASUU resume talks today

Hope of an end to the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has risen following the planned meeting today between the ASUU leadership and the the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.

Public universities across Nigeria have been on forced vacation since ASUU embarked on strike on July 1 to protest federal government’s failure to keep an agreement reached with the union in 2009.

Last Friday night’s meeting between Anyim and ASUU was deadlocked and both parties are expected to resolve the issue of Earned Allowance when they resume talks today in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

Another meeting will hold on Thursday between ASUU and members of the implementation committee on Needs Assessment Report to Nigerian Universities would also meet with ASUU on Thursday to finalise issues on funding.

The committee headed by Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State was inaugurated Friday by the federal government and has promised to help resolve all the pending issues to make way for the call-off of the strike.
