Court adjourns case against journalist

The case against a Kaduna-based journalist, Mr Jacob Onjewu Dickson has been adjourned for June 9, 2016.

Mr Dickson, 36, was charged by the police for alleged “false personation and inciting disaffection to government,” as contained in their First Information Report.

He was granted bail at the sum on N100,000 by Kaduna Chief Magistrate Court 1 on the May 5th,2016 after spending six days in prison detention.

The Prosecutor from the Kaduna State Ministry of Justice, Mr Dari Bayaro seek for the adjournment “to present star witnesses.”

Counsel to Mr Jacob, Barrister Timothy Bonnet did not object to the plea, hence it was granted by the Chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Yusuf.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) had earlier condemned the arrest of her member, especially as the incident is coming on the heels of President Muhammadu Buhari's directive to stop ill-treatment of journalists.

A communique issued on Thursday by Comrade Garba Muhammad, Chairman of the Kaduna State Council of the NUJ, at the end of its extra-ordinary congress held on Wednesday evening in Kaduna, said the council celebrated its own World Press Freedom Day in grief as a colleague was in Prison custody on the order of the state government, while another colleague died.

He called on the government to in the future report any colleague to the State Council of NUJ for disciplinary action, before involving security operatives.

He therefore stressed the need for Council to meet with the state government in order to create an understanding between it and the union.

Mr Muhammad however cautioned members to avoid issues that can set the country and the state ablaze.
