Passengers stranded as airlines delay flights due to aviation fuel scarcity

Hundreds of passengers are stranded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja over flight delays by airlines.

Mostly affected were the domestic travellers in what the airlines blame on aviation fuel scarcity.

An airport official who pleaded not to be named said only two domestic flights had departed the airport while nine others including a flight scheduled for 7:45am have been postponed severally.

The added time for most of the airlines were 30 minutes to four hours.

A notice from Aero and Arik airlines to passengers seen by our reporter at the airport apologised to passengers in two different sms announcing the delay and another announcing the new flight schedules.

Dana Air delayed its Abuja-Lagos flight earlier scheduled for 10:45am to 12:25pm citing aviation fuel scarcity.

“...This delay is due to non availability of aviation fuel. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience,” one of the notices from the airline said.

Airline attendants were also seen explaining the aviation scarcity to passengers and apologising for the delays.

A passenger who only identified himself as Dr. Bala said he was not happy with the delays as his airline announced the delay few minutes before departure and that the delay has made him unable to meet a medical appointment.

“I am in a fix now as I don’t know what to make of this two hour delay and at a time I am financially handicapped,” Bala said.

Apart from the airline flight delays, there was also a traffic snarl with vehicles lining some kilometres.

Officials of the FRSC were seen preventing motorist from forming extra lanes, while many passengers including noticeable VIPs disembarked from the vehicles and walked to the checking-in and departure lounges.
