Fulani herdsmen have launched fresh attacks in parts of Enugu, reports from the state said.
The attacks were said to have taken place on Tuesday in two suburbs of the state capital, namely, Amoji Nike and Agbani. The attacks left several natives wounded and needing urgent medical attention.
A source in Enugu told News Express: “When the people went to their farms on learning of the presence of the herdsmen, they accused them of coming to kill their cattle and opened fire.”
News Express learnt that some of the victims were taken to St. Leo’s Hospital in Park Lane, while some others were rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Abakpa Nike.
The police in Enugu is said to be investigating the attacks.
Contacted last night, the Managing Director of St. Leo’s Hospital, Dr. Chike Akunyili, said: “We do not discuss our patients with the press.”
News Express reports that 76 villagers from Awgu, Enugu, recently spent 15 days in detention after being arrested over a clash with Fulani herdsmen. They were arrested by soldiers, who bundled them to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Abia State Police Command which, in turn, herded them to court on March 17, 2016, where they were denied bail and remanded in prison. The Awgu 76, as they have come to be known, were granted bail 15 days later by two magistrate courts.
The accused persons are facing a five-count charge of felony, including arson, burning down of 90 houses at Obinwanne Fulani Community Settlement in Umunneochi, Abia State, unlawful possession of firearms, and being armed with 42 machetes.
