Kano Electricity Distribution Company, (KEDCO) Tuesday, blamed inadequate generation nationwide for the persistent insufficient availability of power to customers in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina States.

Managing Director of the company, Abubakar Yusuf explained at a press conference that the situation, occasioned by gas constraints, had caused the generation and transmission company to lower the load of power allocated to them for onward distribution to their customers.

In the last 3 months we have been receiving an average of 180 Megawatts; this is grossly below the required average of 300 megawatts to sufficiently supply our numerous customers in the three (3) states of our operation he affirmed.

This regrettable development has forced us to engage in massive load shedding of our feeders, in a bid to serve our customers with the meagre quantum of energy available to us, he said.

He explained that as a distribution company, they could only distribute what was generated and transmitted to them.

The Managing Director also lamented the high spate of vandalization of their infrastructures, regretting that they record at least three acts of vandalization on a daily basis.

Aside from huge sums of money involved in replacing vandalized equipment, the heinous act throws our dear customers into darkness before repairs or replacement takes place, he stated.

He appealed to their customers to assist in safeguarding the power infrastructures within their communities.

He also appealed to them to pay theirbills; saying that non or underpayment of electricity bills as well as energy theft by some customers hinders their abilities to fully pay for the electricity supplied to them by the Generation and Transmission arms of the power sector.(Daily Sun)
