Two final-year students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, are currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) Umuahia for allegedly robbing one of their colleagues at gun point.
Chubuike Amarachi (25), a Physics student, and his partner in crime, Paschal Onyekachi (34), a Banking and Finance student, were alleged to have robbed their fellow student, Emmanuel Ukandu, at gun point in his residence and made away with his Dell laptop and two handsets. The incident happened last fortnight, specifically on August 9.
However, the students were nabbed later after one of them, Amarachi, was identified by a female companion who was with their victim on the day of the robbery incident.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Onyeke Ezekiel, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that Amarachi denied involvement in the crime when he was arrested and taken to Ikwuano Police Station.
Ezekiel said Amarachi, however, sang a different tune at the SCID where he opened up and his confessions led to the arrest of his accomplice, Onyekachi.
Police detectives also recovered the stolen items and a Macarov Pistol which the suspects used for the robbery operation and buried it.
The PPRO said the students would be charged to court soon, adding that the Abia State Police Commissioner, Ambrose Aisabor, was combat-ready to deal with students who indulge in cultism, armed robbery and other crimes instead of facing their studies.
According to him, the Police Commissioner has assured that the police is all-out to rout criminal elements in the campuses.
