Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji (Dr.) Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, has set up an inter-ministerial committee to ensure proactive measures against flood disaster.
Speaking during distribution of field materials to victims of the 2012 flood at Kudan Local Government Area yesterday, Yero said the committee is saddled with the task of implementing government’s integrated action plan on flood disaster prevention.
He said:“The committee which has the Kaduna State Urban Planning Agency (KASUPDA) as one of its member agencies will ensure proper building designs, locations as well as prevent building on water ways.
“The committee will also embark on a comprehensive anti-flood campaign which include; evacuation of residents from areas prone to flood, clearing of refuse dumps and drainages. Our target is to ensure that we improve our disaster preparedness level and also remain proactive in mitigating the effect of such occurrence.”
Governor Yero urged people in the state to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse so as to avoid blocking drainages which is an invitation to flood disaster.
Distributing the building materials to victims of last year flood disaster, the governor called on them to utilise the items in rebuilding their houses and to resist temptation of selling the items.
Items distributed by the governor at the event include roofing sheets, woods, nails and cement. Governor Yero also distributed farm inputs, sewing machines and other job creation items under the Kudan Local Government Area SURE-P Programme.
In a similar development, the governor has pledged his administration’s readiness to complete work on the Kudan Dam in order to put it into optimum use.
The governor who visited the dam site today promised to pay special attention towards actualising completion of the project.
