NASSI faults FG’s mass sack of heads of government agencies

The Director-General of the NASSI, Abia State Chapter, Mr Imo Anasonye, has faulted the recent mass sack of heads government agencies, saying that such actions impede good governance and economic growth.

Anasonye, during an interview conducted Wednesday in his office in Aba, also advised the Federal Government to look beyond party borders and pick good economists who would save Nigeria’s economy from total collapse.

The Abia NASSI boss argued that in disengaging heads of government agencies, government should have identified those who were not performing and show them the exit door and not to sack even those who were excelling just to satisfy party yearnings.

Anasonye said that the country’s current economic woes demand the sourcing of best brains who should evolve sound economic formula which would be the antidote to Nigeria’s economic woes and save the nation from economic collapse.

He stressed that sacking both productive and non-productive heads of government agencies at this time of economic crisis was detrimental to the health of an already sick economy.

“I will suggest to the present APC-led Federal Government is that they should do an appraisal of all the institutions of the government. Let change of personnel occur only where there is the need.

“Where the performance is low, let change occur there. Nobody can justify the thinking that all the heads of those government institutions sacked recently do not know what they were doing. It is not possible. So we have to look critically at those institutions, identify those whose heads are doing good jobs and retain them to save our country and people in this critical time,” he said.

The NASSI DG noted that government should also be very careful while sacking heads of some government establishments to fill a political gap while good governance suffers.

“Most of these heads of government agencies are non-partisan and professionals ready to serve Nigeria under any government that means well. When we identify such people, the government of the day should use them. There is nothing wrong in using ministers that served well in the last administration because they will do service to Nigeria and not a political party. And their contributions should be esteemed to be more important than party interests,” he added.

Anasonye also suggested that the culture of lack of continuity and lack of policy sustainability which hampers growth of businesses should be considered more important when making such changes.

He noted that Nigerians and their leaders needed to be re-orientation on patriotism and service to fatherland for the good of all, adding that service to a party or an individual is secondary.
