A Federal High Court has issued a notice of ‘consequences of disobedience to a court order’ to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The form 48 notice was issued to INEC through the Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu and the Secretary of the Commission Mrs Augusta Ogakwu.
The notice read: “Unless the election umpire obeys the directions contained in the order of the Federal Court particularly the fifth order restraining it from acting on the list of nominated candidates except those emanating from the plaintiff, it will be guilty of contempt of court and you will be liable to be committed to prison.”
The Ejike Oguebego faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State had approached the Federal High Court following what it said was the refusal of INEC to obey the orders of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had reinstated Mr Oguebego as the bonafide leader of the party in the state and also upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court which ordered INEC not to accept the nominees presented by the caretaker committee in the state.
