Declare Anambra senatorial seats vacant, APGA tells INEC

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) has asked INEC to declare vacant, the seats of the PDP candidates in the Anambra State Senatorial election.

The National Publicity Secretary of APGA, Mr Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, made the call at a press briefing in Awka, Anambra State capital.

The party’s decision was as a result of its interpretation to the Supreme Court judgment of January 29 that upheld the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership of Ejike Oguebego in Anambra State.

The party also gave the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the option of conducting a fresh election or return the APGA candidates who came second in the said election as duly elected on grounds that the PDP did not present any candidate in the election.

Mr Obi-Okoye argued citing sections 140 and 141 of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended that though the Supreme Court gave victory to the Oguebego-led executive of Anambra PDP, the candidates in his line-up did not have the opportunity to contest the election.

He also maintained that as a result of this, they did not participate at every stage of the elections.

For the other faction that participated in the election, APGA maintained that they were wrongly returned as having won the election and demanded that their Certificates of Return be withdrawn.
