Contrary to expectation, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to announce the winner of the Bayelsa State governorship election more than 24 hours after voting was concluded in the supplementary ballot held in Southern Ijaw Local Government and 102 Polling Units across six local governments – Brass, Ekeremor, Nembe, Sagbama, Yenagoa and Ogbia.
Officials of the electoral body that handled elections in Brass, Yenagoa, Sagbama and Ogbia LGA announced the results in the early hours of today – between 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.
After the results from Ogbia were announced the electoral body said it would take a break and reconvene by 11:00 a.m.
Results from polling units in two other local government areas – Kolokuma/Opokuma and Nembe – were announced this afternoon, after which INEC adjourned to await results from Southern Ijaw.
The election in the area was cancelled on December 7, 2015, due to violence, ballot box snatching and stuffing, harassment and abduction of electoral officials. Southern Ijaw LGA has a total of 120,827 registered voters, 425 Polling Units and five Voting Points.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is maintaining its lead in the election, with the federal-ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in second position.
