A total number of 50 hospitals in Orumba South and Awka North local government areas of Anambra State in South-East Nigeria have received various hospital equipment from the state Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) during the opening of MDG offices in the two councils.
The equipments include beds, hospital screens, office cabinets, mosquito nets, fans and tricycles.
Governor Peter Obi at the occasion said the state government will do all in its power toensure that the MDG programme reaches every community in the state, adding that the equipment will help in the improvement of health as well in the treatment of patients.
In her speech, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Prof. Chinyere Okunna, the Anambra MDG Coordinator, stressed that it is part of the programme of the MDG to get closer to the people.
She revealed that same gesture would be extended to other local government areas in the state that do not yet have MDG presence.
An indigene of one of the beneficiary local government areas, Mr. Onyedika Nwankwo, expressed delight at the gesture of the government through the MDG programme.
He added that the equipments are things the community need for improvement of health.
Also Mrs. Ify Nwankwo said: “We thank the Governor immensely for this. Over time, we have never had this kind of assistance from anyone,” he said.
The MDG is a United Nations initiative which aims to half poverty by 2015.
