Senate adopts report on roads, railways construction; wants a return of toll gates

Nigerian Senate has adopted the report of its Committee on Works, seeking to revamp federal roads and construction of concrete roads over laterite and use of railways in the country.

This was followed by the motion sponsored by Senator Barnabas Gemade, Chairman Senate Committee on Works, which highlighted the poor state and collapse of Nigerian federal roads, during Senate plenary session on Thursday.

Senator Ibn Na’allah in his comment on the motion, stated that there should be commitment and sacrifice from the private sector in joining hands together with the federal government.

He said: “it is practically impossible for government to provide all roads through budgetary provisions; the private sector is needed in the development of road infrastructure.”

Senator Anyanwu, who contributed to the debate, noted that “if federal roads are in good and perfect conditions, Nigerians are ready to pay the toll fare.”

Senator Oha Ohabunwa added an amendment to the recommendation of the report, that the Road Concession Commission should look into the possible aspect of funding so as to put into good shape the federal roads.

While speaking on the state of road networks in his state, Senator Dino Melaye, Kogi West, lamented the long time neglect and sought for urgent need to fix it.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while appreciating the efforts of the committee, admitted that Private Public Partnership is important and “the Senate must find a way to reintroduce toll gates at actual value for money for Nigerians.”
