German football commemorated the victims of the Holocaust as Friday marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
“The DFL and the clubs of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 remember the victims of the Nazi regime,” the German Football League (DFL) said on Twitter.
“We want to ensure that their lives will never be forgotten”it said, sharing a video that included Jewish athletes and club members that the Nazi regime murdered.
Bayern Munich, the defending German Bundesliga champions and record holders, declared in a statement their stance against antisemitism and plans to commemorate the victims this weekend.
“On the occasion of today's International Holocaust Remembrance Day, FC Bayern is holding a weekend of events about the culture of remembrance,” it said.
“Together with the entire football world, the club says this year: “Never again!” Under this year's motto 'Remembering together - shaping the future together,' the German record champions want to raise awareness of the past, while also looking to the future,” it added.
Bayern Munich added that club members would “celebrate Shabbat together with the Jewish community” this weekend.
On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marked every year on Jan. 27, people around the world honor more than 6 million Jews murdered during World War II.
Around 1.1 million people, mostly Jews from across Europe, were killed at the Auschwitz camp between 1940 and 1945. Many other minority groups were targeted as well. (Anadolu Agency)
