Matriarch of the Awolowo Family, Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, fondly called Mama HID, will be buried today on what would have been her 100th birthday. Funeral arrangements released by her family indicated that she will be buried in Ikenne, Ogun State, beside her husband, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the defunct Western Region.
The burial of the late Iyalode of Remoland and Yeye Oodua of Ife, who died on September 19 – 67 days to her centenary – is expected to be graced by prominent personalities, among the President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who happens to be her grandson-in-law.
The funeral will start with a church service to be held this morning at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne, to be followed immediately by her interment.
Major markets in Remoland, Ogun State, will be closed in her honour.
The burial draws the curtain on a series of funeral activities that included programmes in the late matriarch’s honour by the Ogun State Government.
