IGP cautions officers against bribery, human rights violation

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, has vowed that the force would deal ruthlessly with officers and men involved in corruption and human rights abuse.

The IGP gave the warning on Tuesday during his visit to the Kaduna State Police Command headquarters on a familiarization tour.

Officers and men of the Kaduna State Police command gathered for an interactive session with the IGP.

He told officers and men of the command to live above board in the discharge of their duties, stating that his administration has zero tolerance for corruption.

The IGP commended the command for its commitment in the fight against crime across the state. He, however, frowned at a situation where the Police keep suspects in detention unnecessarily without having sufficient evidence against such persons.

The Police chief charged them to always be civil with the people and to also respect the cultural values of their host communities, vowing to punish any officer found guilty of human rights abuse and professional misconduct.

IG Arase further reminded the men that the ban on road-block was still in force, noting that the ‘safer highways’ as introduced by the force should not be seen as an opportunity to extort money or brutalize motorists.

He stated that already, a task force had been set up to ensure compliance, and vowed to arrest Commissioners of Police and Area Commanders who fail to enforce the ban.

Asides the warnings and riot acts, the Police chief also had some cheering news for his men.

He promised that the force would build low cost houses for the rank and file of the force, as their welfare would be taken more seriously than ever.

To match his words with action, the IG ordered an instant promotion of a Constable, Solomon Ladan to the rank of Sergeant because of the questions and submissions made by the latter during the interactive forum. (Channels TV)
