South-East Govs, National Assembly members, Ohanaeze meet today over Biafra

Governors of the five South-East states, National Assembly members from the zone and the leadership of apex Igbo group Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo are expected to again meet in Enugu today to continue their deliberations on how to end the pro-Biafra protests by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

The meeting comes amidst heightening tension and threats of possible military crackdown as IPOB protests sporadically paralyse economic activities across the South-East and South-South states following the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB Leader and Director of Radio Biafra, by the Department of State Security (DSS) despite having met stringent bail conditions imposed by an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court.

The governors had first met over the issue for several hours last Tuesday (November 17). After that marathon meeting presided over by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, the governors called for peace, assuring that efforts were being made to resolve the issue.

A communiqué read by Okorocha disclosed that the governors would reconvene at the same venue on Sunday, November 22, and had extended invitations to other stakeholders in the zone, among them National Assembly members and Ohanaeze chieftains.
