The incredible secret pain which late apartheid freedom fighter, late Evangelist Sonny Okosuns took to the grave, 14 years ago, has emerged at last.
A source who is gathering material for his autobiography, recalled that Okosuns, in a reflective mood, lamented that he wasted his time by joining forces with the South Africans in their struggles through his songs for liberation.
Okosuns, who concealed successfully the seriousness of his pains, according to him, had to open up because he knew that he can’t make it.
Okosuns, he said, had to let people know that his South Africans brothers and sisters he had done much for, had no iota of respect and love for him and Nigerians.
He maintained that this dawned on him in 1994 when apartheid was officially outlawed by the authorities that was at that material time. The Ishan-born reggae gospel icon who spoke with strong conviction, buttressed his claim when he informed my feeler that every South African sees every Nigerian lady as somebody who believes in bottom power and uses it too to get whatever she wants, while for the men, they are simply fraudulent businessmen who specialize in 419 runs, as for the young man/young ladies undergraduates, they are simply cultists.
Late Okosuns finally ended his tales of woes when he recalled bitterly that South Africans dislike him and have contempt for him and Nigerians which he said that he confirmed during Namibia’sIndependence when he went there to perform.
“There, I saw disturbing posters, warning South Africans to beware of Nigerians because of their many social vices of which they are notorious for. The late singer who took this secret pain to the grave 14 years ago wondered aloud why they should pay him back with such evil after identifying with them in their time of need.”
