The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Wednesday urged residents of Enugu to stop dumping refuse in the drains and water ways.
The Enugu State Co-coordinator of the agency, Mr. Babatunde Adigun, gave the advice during a road walk on flood control in Enugu.
He said that flooding in different parts of the country necessitated the advice and the road show.
Adigun said that the essence of the road walk campaign was to sensitise the people on the best ways to dispose waste.
He said that though the road walk was not a regular exercise, when topical situation like this arose, the agency would always find a way of enlightening the people through it.
The coordinator expressed delight that the exercise was well received by the residents of the area, adding that they were enlightened on the hazards of flood.
He said that the exercise was in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the State Ministry of Environment.
The coordinator said that the effect of dumping waste in the drainage was that it hinders free flow of water, thereby causing flood.
He said that there were reported cases where flood took over some homes in Enugu, even though; the city was not along the costal lines.
Adigun attributed the incidence of flooding to the activities of people, who built houses on water ways and stuff the drainage with waste. (NAN)
