IGP receives UN Deputy Executive Director of Counter Terrorism, seeks assistance on capacity building

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon E. Arase, has appealed for the assistance of the United Nations Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate in the area of capacity building to tackle terrorism.

He made the appeal when the Deputy Executive Director of the Directorate, Mr Weixiong Chen, paid him a courtesy call in his office at the Force Headquarters on Thursday.

“The visit, which was at the instance of the National Security Adviser to the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, discussed, amongst other things, the identification of technical assistance needs,” Force Public Relations Officer, Ag. ACP Olabisi Kolawole, said.

“Receiving Mr. Chen and his entourage, the IGP said what the Nigeria Police Force need at present to combat terrorism is capacity building, International Police Cooperation, Mechanism for coordination of operational activities of all law enforcement agencies with a counter-terrorism mandate and institutionalisation of mechanism,” Kolawole said.

She quoted Mr Chen as saying that he was in the office of the IGP to identify specific needs of the Nigeria Police Force with a view to channeling it to the United Nations.

“Thanking Mr. Chen for the honour of visiting the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Solomon Arase said partnership with international organisations such as the United Nations is a welcome development in the fight against terrorism,” IGP Arase said.
