Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has broken tradition by accepting an honorary degree award – the first time he is doing so since he became governor over seven years ago.
The governor had since assuming office declined both academic and traditional awards offered to him by various schools and organisations.
That was until Friday, April 26. On that day, Obi kept his promise to accept the award from from the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), regarded as one of the best universities in Nigeria.
The governor, who was unavoidably absent, sent the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Oseloka H. Obaze, and Chief of Staff, Prof. Stella Chinyere Okunna, to represent him at the 22nd Convocoation Ceremony of ABSU, where the award was to be conferred on him.
Though well received by the school authorities led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chibuzo Ogbuagu, Obaze and Okunna were however told that a special award ceremony would be arranged for Governor Obi because the degree is not conferred by proxy.
Speaking as the head of delegation, Obaze expressed appreciation for the honour, which he described as being well deserved since Obi, in his words, is “a humble, purposeful, diligent and visionary leader,” adding: “His accomplishments will stand the test of history.”
Continuing, Obaze, said: “It will please all those gathered here to know that this award is a first for Gov. Obi. In almost eight years in office, he has declined both academic and traditional awards offered to him. In sum, Gov. Obi does not usually accept awards, but he is accepting this particular one, because it is coming from Abia State and because it is based on measurable and discernible achievements.”
He thanked the University Visitor, Governor T. A. Orji (Ochendo), and the Governing Council of ABSU for the honour and wished the graduates “the best of luck and God’s blessings.”
