Anambra community sends SOS to Obiano over flood disaster

The people of Umuogbunu village in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State have sent a Save-Our-Soul message to Governor Willie Obiano to as a matter of urgency intervene in the erosion and flood problems experienced by residents of Orogbu Street, in Umuogbunu Village, Awka.

Residents of the area made the call following the recent heavy downpour that destroyed property worth millions of naira in the area over the weekend.

WhenNews Expressvisited the place, the only access route to the Street which was situated adjacent to the NIPOST office along the Zik’s Avenue, Awka had been cut off with heavy erosion developing at various spots.

A look further down the street showed occupants of the houses and shop there were seen busy cleaning up as a result of the damages done to their properties while some residents whose cars were stuck were busy doing palliatives to enable them remove their vehicles.

A Medical Doctor whose hospital was affected by the disaster, Dr Cliff Okafor, revealed that the negative development which had lasted for about 5 years was caused by improper termination of floodwater coming from the Ziks Avenue.

He observed that they have made several representations to the appropriate quarters for intervention as well as sustained palliatives on the road, but regretted that the recent rains had defied every of their efforts, calling on the State Government to as a matter of urgency, come to their aid.

Some other residents who included Mrs. Anselm Okafor and Mrs. Theresa Anakwe lamented how they had lived in fear all these years as a result of the flooding which they noted usually occur with heavy downpours adding that they almost lost lives during the weekend’s downpour.

Also, a barber whose shop was entirely cut off by the disaster, Mr. Chibueze Eneh, said the development has crippled every commercial activity in the area as customers could no longer access their premises for onward transaction.
