The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, has vowed that the police would prosecute perpetrators of violence against children in Nigeria.
Mr. Arase gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja, at an event held to launch an action to end violence against children.
He said the action was triggered by the increasing spate of physical and sexual violence on children.
He further stated that the Gender Unit of the force had been reinforced to appropriately prosecute offenders, whom he said would face the full wrath of the law.
Children as young as six have been forced into captivity, subjected to all forms of physical and sexual abuse, something that the police said it would no longer allow to persist.
A United Nations’ representative at the event recounted several shocking instances of ill-treated children who had been beaten, burned or outright threatened by adults.
The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Ishaq Bello, said that any child who had been molested could forward a complaint directly without fear to the Children and Young Persons’ Court.
Some children at the event also urged the federal government to redouble efforts in the search for the missing Chibok Girls, abducted from their school’s dormitory by Boko Haram terrorist on April 14, 2014.
It is a call for more action by all Nigerians to protect the lives and future of children if the country must witness visible growth. (Channels TV)
