Bayelsa Polls: REC raises the alarm over low turnout for Continuous Voters Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Bayelsa, Mr. Baritor Kpagih has decried the poor turnout of residents for the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR).

Kpagih told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Yenagoa, that the exercise that commenced on Wednesday would end on Monday, adding that the turnout was low.

He said that political parties and stakeholders were not doing enough to mobilise the people to participate in the exercise, which was facing some challenges.

According to him, the challenges are due to the riverine nature of most parts of the state that are accessible only through the creeks.

The REC said that INEC in Bayelsa had decentralised the CVR from the eight local government offices of the commission to the 24 state constituency levels.

He said that the exercise was to ensure that eligible voters were not disenfranchised, ahead of the December 5 governorship election.

Kpagih explained that the CVR was for voters, who have not registered before, those with incomplete registration and those who turned 18 after the previous registration.

He warned that anyone, who might attempt multiple registrations, would be fished out and the name of the affected person would be deleted from the voter register. (NAN)
