Obi throws light on terrorism trends in Anambra State

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra has thrown more light on the security challenges facing the state and what his administration is doing about them.

He was speaking at a forum on “Assessing the trends of terrorism in Anambra State” held yesterday at the 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha.

Governor Obi’s thoughts were relayed through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Oseloka Obaze, who represented him at the event.

He noted that the present security challenges in the state were being addressed in the context of ongoing vigilante reforms, greater emphasis on community policing and grasping of the notion of the “enemy within.”

“The paradox of the day is that those who clamour for more stringent security measures were the least inclined to assist in community policing through human intelligence and information sharing. Such ambivalence was unproductive,” the governor said.

He made a distinction between domestic and foreign terrorism, but noted that while both were just as troubling, the “enemy within” was more destructive and deadly.

The governor also spoke of the peacetime role of the military, civilian-military cooperation and prospects of terrorism in Anambra State and preemptive measures.

He praised the proactive role of the army as part of the Anambra State security architecture and urban patrol arrangement.

The forum was graced by officers and men of the regiment.
