Thinking aloud on the proposed constitution amendment bills, By Prof. Echefuna' R. G. Onyebeadi

Senate President Ahmed Lawan

By the time Local Government Areas (LGAs) constitutionally become a Tier of Government, can Nigeria still be rightly described as a “Federal Republic?”

Will this aberration not legitimise the unjustly skewed LGAs in favour of a particular section of the country to the detriment of others and, by extension, the unjustifiable financial allocations, make-belief population and all that comes with it?

Does the Establishment of “State Security Council” include State/Regional Police even at the height of insecurity in the country. So, where does this leave us?

Wouldn’t the inclusion of VAT in the exclusive legislative list amount to robbing Adams to pay Adamu?

Is the expansion of citizenship by registration not a way to accommodate this regime’s policy of diffusing aliens with citizens and making imported “terrorists herdsmen” and their like, citizens through the back door?

Wouldn’t this also change the demographics of Nigeria in favour of aliens? – something more like protecting the interest of foreigners more than that of indigenous peoples of Nigeria?

A Mayor for Abuja? When did our Federal Capital Territory become indigenised?

How does these proposed amendments to the already flawed rogue military imposition known as 1999 constitution, as amended, reduce costs of governance, minimise monetisation of the operating political system and guarantee inclusive governance handed over to us by the founding leaders of Nigeria?

Will the ritual of constitutional amendments that gulps billion of Naira every legislative cycle not be rekindled again in the next legislative houses after all these make-belief amendments to the 1999 Constitution, as amended?

When will there be an end to these spurious amendments to the fatally and incurably flawed skewed military imposition known as 1999 constitution, as amended?

Wouldn't it have made a better sense and cost-saving to evolve a new governance model that is acceptable to all for Nigeria as proposed by Eminent Elders Forum?

More questions than answer!

Just thinking aloud!....
