Onyeka Onwenu laments rising cases of baby factories

Director-General, National Centre for Women Development, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu has expressed concern about the rising cases of baby factories in some parts of the country.

She told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday that the development was worrisome and dehumanising, expressing shock that girls could sell the product of their body.

She also observed that the practice was prevalent in the eastern part of the country, warning that the trend would destroy the future of younger generations.

Onwenu insisted that the war against running baby factories required intense advocacy from government agencies, non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations.

She stated that young women and girls needed to inculcate in their children values of self-worth.

She also stressed that premium must be placed on ensuring that nobody manipulated the girl-child into becoming “baby making tool for sale.”

“A long time ago, there were certain values that we were thought not just in the homes, but also in the schools.

“There were so many things that were not acceptable then; even in churches and mosques, you find these teachings as dominant topics. We must restore such values.”

She noted that the next International Day of Women and Girls’ summit would be devoted to addressing issues affecting women and girls, especially those that bordered on such morals and values.

She said that the summit would hold on Oct. 15 with the theme, ‘empowerment and training: Innovation for the Girl-Child.’

“And we are going to be talking about rape, violence, baby factories and people will gather to proffer solutions to what we should do.” (NAN)
