The heated controversies generated from the allegations that Governor Babatunde Fashola spent N73.3 million of Lagos tax payers’ money on a personal website, www.tundefashola.com, has been described as an unconfirmed accusation and speculation coloured as fact.

The trio of Barrister Samuel Adeola Ilori, President, Vote for Service Initiative; Steve Aborisade – Executive Director, Projekthope/Media Integrity and Engineer Olumide Alasoadura – Co-convener, Congress of Electorates, rendered this verdict in a statement entitled ‘Watching the Watchers! Corruption: Nigeria’s Civil Society Groups Must Come into Equity with Clean Hands’.

The Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC) had recently petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the issue. The three organistaions, however, said: “The credibility of our accusations should be supported by objective truth that is incontrovertible before we go to town to make accusations that may malign the integrity of individuals and groups. This is important to separate our activism from politically motivated actions, several of which we have witnessed lately that serve not the interest of the people beyond promoting the agenda of those behind it.”

The statement accused CSNAC of overlooking other instances that were recently raised involving some other persons, saying: “In fact, its outright silence in these instances become worrisome.”On the petition against Fashola, the groups said: “Perhaps it might be due to the desire of the group to be strategic for maximum impact.”
