The police on Monday arraigned three ex-policemen at an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court

over alleged unlawfully killing of one Oluwatobi Badmus, 20.

The accused persons are AwodeyiAdesola, 30; Adedeji Adekunle, 32; and Adepetu Olamilekan, 27.

A Principal Legal Officer, Mr. Dele Ogunyemi had told the court that the accused unlawfully killed Badmus as his death occurred shortly after the deceased left a police station where he interacted with them.

Ogunyemi said that the trio committed the offence on July 21, 2014, at 'B' Division Police Station in Akure, Ondo State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused persons committed the offence while they were still in the service of Nigeria Police Force.

NAN also reports that the victim was arrested for allegedly stealing a BlackBerry mobile phone belonging to one Prophet Bisi Adejuyigbagbe and was allegedly tortured to death.

Ogunyemi said the offence is contrary to section 317 and punishable under section 325 of the criminal code cap 37 vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The three accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge of manslaughter.

However, Mr. Steve Adebowale, the counsel to the accused prayed the court to grant his clients bail in liberal terms, in that they were still presumed innocent until proved otherwise.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Charity Adeyanju granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties each in like sum.

Adeyanju added that the sureties must submit a three-year tax clearance obtained from the state internal revenue service and one of the sureties must be a Grade Level 10 civil servant.

She said that the sureties must reside within the court's jurisdiction and also fill an affidavit of means with two recent passport photographs.

The case was adjourned till Sept. 30 for hearing. (NAN)
