NGO concludes plan to establish sexual assault centre in Bauchi

A Bauchi-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Iqra Foundation for Women and Youth Development (IFWYD) has concluded plans to establish a centre for ‘Sexual Assault’ in the State.

Founder of the Organization, Barr. Amina Garuba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Saturday that the centre would render assistance to traumatized victims of rape in the state.

Amina, a Magistrate with the Bauchi State Judiciary, noted that most victims in the state hardly completed therapy and other medical processes, as they could not bear the ‘embarrassment’ associated with the stigma of being raped.

“Most victims are from the lower strata of the society, as such are afraid to open up to enable the prosecution of offenders, due to threats and stigma.

“Parents of rape victims also find it difficult to continue treatment of their children, due to traditional and other social perceptions.

“Iqra Foundation will therefore set up a center that will take care of such victims, and ensure that they attend and complete therapy and other treatment.

“Where there are proves and suspects, the Foundation will collaborate with the state Ministry of Justice to bring the culprits to justice.

“The centre will be located at the premises of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, to facilitate its service to humanity.”

She said that the location of the center would also enable the engagement of the medical experts of the hospital to make cases for prosecution of culprits.

Amina said that the Foundation would also engage legal practitioners to assist in prosecution, adding that through investigation and legal punishment, the rate of the crime might be reduced. (NAN)
