The Anambra State Commander of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Sule Momodu, yesterday called on judges in the country to use the law as provided by the agency’s Act to discourage the trafficking in illicit and hard drug among Nigerians.
He made the statement in Onitsha, the commercial nerve center of Anambra State while presenting the report of the achievement of the agency in the month of July.
Momodu lamented that the conviction meted out against two traffickers arrested in the state was no too strong to discourage people from engaging in illicit drug deals.
He appealed to Nigerian Judges to consider the negative impact of drug trafficking in any society, so as to ensure that minimum sentences are given according to the NDLEA Act.
The state NDLEA boss said, “The two suspects convicted were given about two years imprisonment, which is not in the agency’s Act and can equally encourage people to join drug trafficking because of the soft punishment.”
He further announced the arrest of Chigozie Ogazie, Izuchukwu Obi and Patrick Ohamazoje for the possession of heroin, cocaine and cannabis Sativa also known as marijuana.
He also hailed Governor Obiano for his support to NDLEA adding that criminality has a relationship with drug as criminals rely on stimulants to carry out their dastardly acts which is why drug must be fought to standstill in the state.
Momodu said that Delta State remained the highest producer of cannabis sativa and as long as they border with Anambra State, the drug will always find its way to the state hence, he called on the governor to help them refurbish their four speed boat which has been in bad condition in a matter of urgency or purchase new ones for them to improve their surveillance of waterways, where these drug peddlers use to flood Anambra with marijuana.
While appealing to Governor Obiano to equip them with new vehicles for more effectiveness, he pointed out their operational vehicles are getting old and worn out saying that it hampers their performance.
Momodu assured the readiness of the NDLEA in the State to continue to effectively contribute to the security of the state saying that illicit drug trafficking and abuse is the mother of all crime.
