Court dissolves 6-year-old marriage over rituals

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, on Wednesday dissolved a six-year-old marriage between one Suliyat and her husband, Musbaudeen Kayode-Ade Kojo, over alleged introduction of ritual in the marriage.

Dissolving the union, President of the court, Mr.HenricAgbaje, held that there was no need wasting time trying to settle the matter over the allegation as all effort at resolving it had failed.

“In the interest of peaceful coexistence, the union between Suliyat and Kayode-Adekojo has ceased to be henceforth.

“Suliyat shall take custody of the child until he attains the legally recognized age to start living with the father.

“Kayode-Adekojo shall in addition to being responsible for his education, pay a monthly feeding allowance of N3, 000 for his upkeep.”

Earlier, Suliyat had told the court that her husband was using sexual sessions between them for ritual.

“Since I got married to Kayode-Adekojo in 2009, he usually first wipes my vagina with his singlet and socks before inserting his manhood.

“Worst still, he made the sexual encounter, six times a week, a rigorous exercise which I bitterly complained that I shall not be able to cope with.

“Subsequently, I started falling ill to the extent that I developed mental illness.

“When he heard that I was ill, he moved some of my property into one of his friends’ store, telling me that he had nothing to do with me again as his spouse.”

Suliyat also told the court that “throughout the period of my admission at the psychiatric ward at Adeoyo Hospital, he never knew whatever happened to me and the only child between us.

“After my full recovery, he went about threatening my life and the lives of my relatives.

“In fact, as we were entering the court this morning, he still threatened that I will never survive more than a year for engaging in a legal tussle with him.

“Please my lord, refuse him custody of the child because he may abuse him.”

Responding, Kayode-Adekojo told the court that Suliyat’s half-brothers were the ones collaborating with her in her evil thought.

“My lord, I am not interested in parting ways with her, but if she so desires, she is free.

“The wellbeing of my child is most paramount to me because in Suliyat’s family, they have a strong history of people being insane.

“In her family, Suliyat is the most educated with a school certificate, which she got because I sent her to school between 1989 and 2009, before I married her.

“My child will not be given education if she takes custody of him.” (NAN)
