CP Borno advises journalists to be patriotic in reporting insurgency

Commissioner of Police in Borno, Mr. Aderemi Opadokun has advised journalists to be patriotic in the reportage of the Boko Haram insurgency that had affected some parts of the country.

Opadokun gave the advice on Tuesday in Maiduguri when he received members of Borno Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalism (NUJ).

He said that journalists had great role in promoting stability in the country through positive reports.

“We expect some patriotism from the media in the coverage of the insurgency, considering the fact that you are out to report facts.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, so we must strive to ensure that our reports are geared toward promoting peace and unity among the people.”

The CP said the police were ready to provide useful and timely information to journalists in the state.

“I want to express my profound appreciation for the visit. Let us work toward ensuring that the information we give out about the state is not always negative.”

He added, “We want the public to know that the Boko Haram terrorists are not winning the battle because they are not in the majority.

“Law abiding residents are in the majority and should not be made to fear.”

Opadokun said that sporadic attacks carried out in some communities by suspected Boko Haram terrorists were not an indication that they were succeeding.

He urged journalists to strive hard to inform Nigerians of the successes recorded by security forces against the terrorists.

Earlier, the Chairman of the chapel, Mr. Abdulkareem Harunatold the commissioner that the visit was aimed at solidifying relationships between the media and police. (NAN)
