NIEEE tasks distribution companies over unhealthy electricity transformers

The Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE) on Tuesday tasked the Distribution Companies (DISCOs), on the need to provide healthy electricity transformers nationwide.

NIEEE Chairman, Mr. Gracious Omatseye said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that their advocacy for new and quality electricity transformers followed many consumers lingering challenges which have been traced to the equipment.

“It is evident that if the generation companies generate 100,000 Megawatts of electricity and the transmission company does their work effectively, the DISCOs would not even be able to get power to the consumers.

“One of the major problems DISCOs have is that most of their 300 or 500 KVA distribution transformers are not strong enough to accept the load assigned to them from the National Grid.

“This has led to explosion which results in power outages in most homes in the country.

“Good enough, we have started seeing more of electricity poles and mounted transformers on the streets in some regions, but we need more so that whatever we are generating will be getting to the consumers.

“We are all aware that this sub-sector is the most complex.”

Omatseye urged the Federal Government to genuinely look into the excuses of the DISCOs and correct the shortfalls by ensuring that every concern was handled on its own merit.

“I am aware that the regulatory arms of government have the necessary facilities to keep the power sector in check.

“Mr. President should, therefore, request for a situation report from the regulatory agencies of government on a quarterly basis.” (NAN)
