At least 33 people were yesterday convicted of various offences by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) mobile court in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State.
The offences include over-loading, seat-belt violation, driving without valid driver’s licence, outright driving without driver’s license, reckless driving and driving against the traffic.
According to the FRSC sector Commander, Mr. Samuel Ajayi, the mobile court exercise was part of the on-going FRSC’s ‘Operation Restore Sanity in Roads in Anambra State.
He noted that the operation was meant to check motorists in Onitsha and its environs that had been notorious in driving against traffic.
According to him, “Most times the best way to enlighten motorists is by enforcement adding that the mobile court was not only for enforcing the rules and regulation of governing usage of the road but also for interpreting them to the offenders.
“I know some commercial drivers, who faced the magistrate and paid the stipulated fines, would have a lot to tell their colleagues in the park and their various loading points. FRSC would continue to join Governor Willie Obiano’s vision in making Anambra roads safer for all,” he said.
Ajayi said that the mobile court exercise would be a continuous exercise and that the corps would not relent until motorists comply with road rules and regulation.
The court, however, discharged two drivers; while all the prosecuted motorists went through some minutes of road safety enlightenment.
One of the convicts, Mr. Simon Madu, said that he was unaware that his front-space passenger was not putting on his seat belt.
