Twenty persons sustained serious injuries in a multiple vehicular accident that occurred on the Onitsha-Owerri road in Anambra on Saturday.
The multiple vehicular accident, which took place at about noon at Oraifite area, involved eight vehicles and a tricycle.
The vehicles include three commercial buses, four cars, a truck and a commercial tricycle.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Unit Commander in Oraifite, Mr Hyginus Ezugwu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha.
Ezugwu said that the incident occurred due to high speeding and some drivers involved not applying defensive driving tact.
He said that officers and men of the unit had taken those wounded to a nearby hospital, adding “We thank God no life was lost as a result of the incident.We have also moved our heavy duty tow truck to clear the road.
“It was primarily caused by high speeding even when the drivers knew they were on a slippery road due to the rain; while those that followed the first vehicle in that multiple vehicular accidents did not apply defensive driving.
“However, soon we would clear the road and decongest the backlog of traffic that had built-up.”
NAN reports that the incident caused traffic hold-up for some hours within Oraifite axis of the road. (NAN)
