Secretary to the Government of Imo State (SGI), Sir Jude Ejiogu, has charged Nigerian physicians to always remain dedicated and as well, uphold the ethics of medical profession in the discharge of their duties, and commended them for prompt response that led to the eradication of Ebola disease in Nigeria.

Sir Ejiogu gave the charge on Wednesday in Owerri while representing Governor Rochas Okorocha at the West African College of Physicians (WACP) Annual General Meeting/Conference 2015.

He said that the selection of Imo State as venue for this year’s conference of the institution has shown that the city is peaceful and conducive enough to accommodate every Nigerian, advising them to feel free as government has put adequate security measures for a hitch-free summit, stressing that the state is not known for kidnapping or breakdown of law and order.

Sir Ejiogu maintained that Governor Okorocha on assumption of office identified health care delivery as one of his major priorities, pointing out that in fulfillment of the promise, he initiated Health at Your Door Step, built 27 General Hospitals in all council areas of the state as well as the establishment of Ochiedike Dialysis Center, where people from other parts of the country go for medical treatment.

According to the SGI, the programme has yielded much fruit, ensured prompt medical attention and as well, mitigated various endemic diseases, and expressed optimism that their conference in the state would go a long way in sustaining the programme of the state government as it concerns their profession.

He therefore called on the leadership of WACP in the country to devise means aimed at sensitising the rural people on the need to maintain public hygiene to avoid the spread of terminal disease in the society.

Meanwhile, national Chairman of WACP, Dr. A.B.O Omotosho has revealed that the body was aimed at training and certifying physicians in different specialties of Medical Profession, maintaining that the summit would map out strategies geared towards the accreditation of suitable institution that run medical programme.

According to Dr. Omotosho, the control of infection requires consistent surveillance, good hygiene, prompt diagnosis and regular treatment, while calling on the general public to collaborate with them in the fight against dreaded diseases.

Highlight of the event was the inspection of medical equipment by the SGI on behalf of the state government; he was in company of the national Chairman of WACP, Dr. A. B.O. Omotosho and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mrs. Lillian Asuzu.
