The Federal Ministry of Information has declared the Nigerian Merchant Navy Seafarers Maritime Petroleum Security and Safety Corps an illegal organisation.
A statement by the Director, National Press Centre of the ministry, Mrs. O.K. Abegunde, described the Nigerian Merchant Navy Seafarers Maritime Petroleum Security and Safety Corps as a non-existent and unaccredited agency parading itself as the fourth arm of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Entitled ‘DISCLAIMER: RE-NIGERIAN MERCHANT NAVY SEAFARERS MARITIME PETROLEUM SECURITY AND SAFETY CORPS’, the statement made available to News Express in Abuja on Tuesday said: “The so called Corps has been busy recruiting youths nationwide, demanding sums of money. They are also duplicating the duties of the Nigerian Navy and wearing similar uniforms and rank where they operate.”
Mrs. Abegunde warned the Federal/State Agencies and the general public to “note the illegal status of the organisation and avoid falling victim of its schemes of extortion and offer of nonexistent jobs.”
She did not, however, indicate if a formal report about the activities of the organisation has been lodged with the Nigeria Police.
