The Presidency has over-ruled the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on the new admission policy which has sparked protests from many candidates and their parents.
Under the controversial policy, candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) were re-assigned to other universities with lower number of applicants than their capacities.
Fielding questions from State House correspondents shortly after leading a delegation of the Federal Ministry of Education to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on its activities and challenges, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, said that JAMB has been directed to put the policy on hold. He said the decision was jointly taken at a stakeholders meeting, adding that the Federal Government has commenced consultations with a view to identifying areas requiring adjustments.
A report this morning by Classic FM Lagos said that JAMB has consequently reversed the policy. It said that students that made the official cut-off mark of 180 have been directed to go and write Post-UME examinations in their schools of first choice before doing so in schools of their second choice.
