The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has distanced its Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, from a Facebook page purportedly opened by him which this afternoon posted a comment to the effect that each of the country’s federal lawmakers collects half a million naira per might for trips within Nigeria.
“I can tell you authoritatively that the Facebook account is fake and that the CBN Governor has absolutely nothing to do with it,” CBN’s Director of Communications, Ugo Okoroafor, told News Express.
He was reacting to a story based on the said Facebook page published by News Express some hours ago under the heading “SENATORS, REPS COLLECT N.5 MILLION PER NIGHT as trip allowance: CBN Governor spills the beans.”
Okorafor pointed out the elementary errors in the Facebook posting, stressing that Sanusi is not known for such careless talk and careless writing.
“You can see that the Facebook comment started with ‘Has the Governor of the CBN’ instead of ‘As the Governor of the CBN’. Sanusi does not make such careless mistakes. I can assure you that he knows nothing about that Facebook account and he has no reason to compare his night allowance with that of anyone else, not to talk of that of members of the national Assembly,” Okorafor stated.
He disclosed that the apex bank has been working with Facebook to close down such accounts set up by detractors to tarnish the image of the CBN Governor.
“We have closed down more than 100 such accounts in the last six months,” he disclosed, while advising the National Assembly and the public to disregard the fake Facebook account and whatever emanates from it.
