The management of Delta Urban Mass Transit Scheme operating in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State has appealed to the state government to help in curtailing the excesses of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Making the appeal on Friday, the management of the Delta Urban Mass Transit also sought the intervention of authorities of the Local Government Council in Uvwie in the alleged harassment and assault of its members.
According to the General Manager of Agofure Motors and operators of Delta Urban Mass Transit Scheme in Uvwie Local Government Area, Mr. John Jonah, the NURTW in Uvwie had been terrorising its workers and the operations of the scheme in the area.
But in a swift reaction, the Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Mr. Henry Baro, debunked the allegation.
Mr. Baro said that the council instigated the crises, claiming that the issues between the management of the Urban Mass Transit Scheme and the NURTW members had been on for some time.
He, however, gave the assurance that the leadership of Uvwie Local Government Council had already taken steps to manage the situation and ensure a peaceful relationship between the two groups.
The Delta Urban Mass Transit Scheme Park in Uvwie Local Government Area, located along the busy east-west road, is usually a busy park with high activities of transporters and commuters, including school children.
A victim of the NURTW members’ attack, Mr. Chamberlain Igedebor, who received medical attention in an undisclosed hospital, said the experience in the hands of his attackers was awful. (Channels TV)
