Boko Haram kills 2 in attack on hometown of Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff

At least two people have been killed in a renewed attack by Boko Haram insurgents on the hometown of Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai.

Buratai is an agrarian settlement in Biu Local Government Area of troubled Borno State, in the country’s North-East.

The town is situated alone along Damaturu - Biu Road about 45 kilometres to Biu town.

Witnesses said the militants have been in the town since Sunday night, attacking residents randomly.

“The militants have come to our town again attacking us late in the night as we ran into bushes for safety.

“I can confirm to you that many people were killed but at the moment I can only be categorical on the killing of an aged man and a mechanic based in the town,” a resident said.

He also said that at the moment, the whole residents have run out of the town for safety.

The attack is coming a day after the Chief of Army Staff visited the 156 KM Damatuiru- Biu road where he said the road had been cleared of landmines with the assurance that security forces would commence routine patrol along the road, urging residents to return to their various towns where they earn their living.

According to reports, the militants have also attacked Buratai town on several occasions, burning residential homes and farm of the Army chief.

Residents also said that the latest attack could be an attempt to undermine the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff to restore peace in the troubled northeastern Nigeria.
