Mr. Gordon Obua, Chief Security Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan, is once more a free man. He was released from solitary confinement by the Department of State Security (DSS) late last night – just a few hours after he was presented to the public to dispel reports that he had died in custody.
A PRNigeria report this afternoon said Mr. Obua was allowed to go home and slept in his house Tuesday night along with his family after a comprehensive de-briefing by operatives of the Department.
“He was released around 10pm Tuesday’s night,” PRNigeria quoted a security source as disclosing.
Obua was arrested last Thursday when he honoured an invitation by the DSS, clamped into an underground dungeon for undisclosed reasons and being denied access to his lawyers, family, and his doctors. He was held without charges filed against him.
On July 18, 2015, Onochie Onwuegbuna, the lead partner at Zeran Legal, has issued a press statement on behalf of Obua’s family complaining about the conditions in which his client was being detained and said that his client was being witch-hunted by the Buhari government. He said his client was diabetic and hypertensive and was being denied his drugs as well as food and water by the DSS.
News Express and the International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law (Intersociety) championed his release from solitary confinement.
