The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, has called for the establishment of rent control boards in the country as one of the methods of curbing insecurity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar spoke in Sokoto on Sunday when he paid Sallah homage to Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the state.
According to the sultan, the proposed boards should be charged with the responsibility of keeping a national database on all landlords and tenants.
``Doing so would reduce the incidences of kidnappings and other crimes with a view to nipping them in the bud across the country.
``Such a nationwide database would enable the government and the security agencies to know whom to get hold of if there are any problems'' the sultan added.
Abubakar also urged Nigerians to take the issue of security as a collective duty and not that the government alone.
The sultan called on the state government to introduce a state-wide schools shuttle bus service to alleviate the suffering of students.
Abubakar further urged the state government to revive the state development fund with a view to boost the socio-economic development of the state.
He also appealed to the state government to take measures to ensure the adequate utilisation of dams in the state to boost irrigation farming.
Abubakar pledged to sustain the existing cordial relationship between the state government and the Sultanate Council of Sokoto.
In his response, Tambuwal commended the sultan for the visit and his efforts to sustain peace and unity in the state and the country. (NAN)
