Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, is appealing to the Federal Government and the United Nations (UN) to intervene in the plights of the people of Bakassi Local Government Area in the state.
Governor Ayade made the call at the Exco Chambers of his office in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, while receiving the Country’s Representative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Mrs. Angele Dikongue Atangana.
It has been three years since Bakassi was ceded to Cameroon and the displaced people are asking for a proper settlement where they can continue with their lives.
The people are said to have been camping at St Mark’s Primary and Secondary School, Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state for over two years and counting.
Governor Ayade, emotional about their predicament, maintained that their plight is an unsettled issue and no amount of dollars can settle the issue than their resettlement.
He gave them an assurance that the state would partner the UN to bring lasting solutions to the Bakassi sufferings.
The UN representative, Angele Dikongue Atangana, on the other hand, gave an assurance that the Bakassi issue would soon be a thing of the past, as the commission was on the verge of implementing past reports by committees set up to look into their plights. (Channels TV)
