The Government of Anambra State, South-East Nigeria, has been officially informed of the death of renowned novelist Chinua Achebe.
The cerebral fiction writer, essayist and poet hailed from Ogidi in Anambra State, where he was born on November 16, 1930.
News of the death, last night in the USA, of Prof. Achebe, was broken this morning by News Express.
Different sources told News Express that his family has informed the Anambra State Government of his passing.
On why the death has not been officially announced, one of the sources said: “It cannot be announced just like that. Achebe is not a small person. Apart from his stature in the society, he is also a titled man in his community. The family is holding necessary consultations before his death can be formally announced.”
Achebe, who was known as THE EAGLE ON THE IROKO, had been sick and in hospital in recent days.
The departed wordsmith is best known for his classical novel Things fall Apart. His last book, There Was A Country: A Personal History of Biafra, has been making ripples in recent months.
