The Nigeria Police have expressed commitment to a healthy respect for the rule of law, promising that they will not indulge in any action that will heighten anxiety in any state of the federation.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, made the declaration in Jos, the capital of Plateau State on Friday.
Mr Arase further assured Nigerians that the police would stick to its constitutional and statutory roles to preserve lives and property, with a caution that people should not resolve to self help by taking laws into their hands.
As part of a familiarisation tour of police commands across Nigeria, the IGP visited the Jos Command to get firsthand information on the working conditions of the police officials.
He had an interactive session with officers and men of the Plateau State Command where some of the challenges facing the command were discussed as well as security issues and war against insurgents in the state.
Earlier, the state Commisioner of Police, Mr Nasiru Oki enumerated some challenges facing the command with a background to the misunderstanding between the Berom natives and Fulani herdsmen.
The IGP thereafter, proceeded to the officers’ mess where he met with traditional and community leaders including religious leaders and various stakeholder on the reoccurring attacks in the state, especially the Barkin Ladi and Riyom attacks. Various speakers offered solutions to the challenge at hand.
With the spate of court orders, in respect of various dissolution of elected Local Government Chairmen by State Governors, the police boss assured Nigerians that the rule of law would be protected by the police. (Channels TV)
